Instead, here's some things that the camera does that you might not have heard about: * Built-in EyeFi support If you've used EyeFi Sd cards before, you probably assumed that it would work with the D7000, since the D7000 now uses Sd cards instead of Cf. But not only do you not have to mess colse to with Sd-to-Cf adapters, the camera is easily EyeFi aware-- you can choose to have it upload or not upload on a slot-by-slot basis (so you might have it automatically upload the Raw files you saved to an EyeFi Pro card in slot 1, but not bother to upload the Jpegs you saved to the EyeFi Explorer card in slot 2), and there is also an icon that appears on the Info display to indicate that there are files waiting to upload, that the upload is in advance or disabled, etc. The Nikon Wifi adapter is going for $400. A 4Gb, class 6 EyeFi card goes for $40. If you easily want to move Raw files, snag the Pro version for $80. Yes, the Nikon adapter does things that EyeFi can't, but if you just want to get your files onto a Pc without pulling the card, why spend 10X the money? You're stuck with the usual limitations of the EyeFi card, but I fully expect to use this feature a Lot with studio portraits-- yeah, it only takes 10 seconds to pull the card and have Windows recognize that you added it, then another 5 seconds to eject the card and stick it back in the camera. But if you just want a quick check that your exposure or focus is where you want it, wouldn't you rather just hit a single key and see your last shot, then get right back into the flow? You may want to drop your Jpeg file sizes to speed up the transfer. * In-camera Raw file processing The camera contains a ton of built-in settings-- in expanding to the basics like Standard, Normal, Landscape, etc, you also get all the assorted Scene modes, which are basically variations on those main settings. Raw processing allows you to see how the shot would have looked had you used one of those other modes. In other words, you shoot in Normal, which basically applies no processing to the image, then select the Raw file, and choose how you'd like to adjust it. You can change the white balance settings, exposure, basic photograph setting (landscape, portrait, etc), noise reduction, color space, and dynamic lighting. With the exception of the developed details on the basic photograph settings, you see a preview of how your change will work on the picture. If you like it, just hit Execute and it writes out a Jpeg to your card. Don't like it, just back out and nothing's saved. This means that you don't have to worry that shooting in Vivid is going to corollary in an oversaturated image, or you can punch something up even more after the fact. The only real drawback here to me is that it is going to kick out a Jpeg, so if you're planning on doing added editing in Photoshop, this may not be the best route. But if you're just looking to go right from the camera to the web, or want to get an idea of how playing with practice settings will work on your shots, this is a weighty shortcut to taking and then deleting a ton of shots. (And keep in mind that Photoshop will allow you to mess with most of these settings when importing Raw files anyway, and the plugin D7000-compatible Raw plugin had a release candidate posted yesterday, so you can finally open your Raw shots.) And a connected feature that's in most other Nikons, but that you might not know about-- you can define your own basic photograph settings. Want something that's super-saturated and super-contrasty? Just hit a few buttons, choose a name, and you're done. On the older Nikons, you had to edit the basic profile itself, now, you can use one as a starting point and adjust from there. Much cleaner. * User-defined settings on the control knob Not as secret as the first two, but I can't emphasize how cool this feature is. Here's the situation I was in last night-- I was shooting a singing contest in a dimly-lit venue. I was allowed to use a flash, but I didn't want to constantly be blasting the singers while they were performing. I defined one setting as shutter priority, 1/60th, Iso Hi 2, center-weighted metering & focus, no flash. The second setting was automatic, Iso auto, full metering and autofocus, flash enabled. I'd take a concentrate shots in U2 with the flash, close the flash down and switch to U1 and shoot a half a dozen shots, then switch back to U2 and use the flash for a concentrate more shots. There was no fumbling for controls, no worrying that I changed the shutter speed without realizing it when changing in the middle of Auto and S-- every time I went from U2 to U1, all my settings were reset to where I put them before the event started. I don't think I ever felt as inevitable about my camera settings in a rapidly changing situation as I did last night-- with just a simple twist of a knob, I was able to change to a thoroughly distinct shooting configuration with absolute trust that it was what I wanted. To me, the utility of this is almost endless-- I'll probably set up one setting for studio portraits, and the other for scenery stuff. If I was still shooting news, I'd probably be swapping in the middle of flash and no-flash configurations. For sports, I'd change in the middle of performance modes and post-game portraits. The only thing that would make this even best would be if I could import and export settings for later use-- even if you use the "Save/Load" settings choice to back up your current configuration to a memory card, it doesn't appear that this data is stored. However, it may be a bug in the Load settings feature, as a estimate of my settings were incorrectly reset when I tried to load in settings. Whether way, it would work best if I could treat these like practice basic photograph settings, salvage them by name and loading them at will. * Built-in interval timer shooting Want to take time-lapse pictures? Just set up your camera on the tripod, specify when you want it to start, how many pictures to take overall, and how many pictures to take each interval and walk away. When it's time to start taking pictures, the camera will automatically focus and shoot, then go back to waiting for the next shot. No messing colse to with tethering, 3rd party software, whatever-- it's all in the camera, and it's all super-easy to set up. You'll find yourself taking pictures of your living room just to see what your cat easily does all day while you're at work. * Zoom in live view This might just be "new to me," but I found it to be very cool for manually adjusting focus when on a tripod-- frame your basic shot, then change to live view. From there, zoom in with the magnifying glass key, and move colse to the image with the pilotage pad until you find the point you want to focus on, then manually focus. Since you can zoom into a tiny quantum of the overall image, you can see that you're getting exactly the focus point you want before you take the shot. One gotcha that I always forget, though-- don't forget to pick your aperture Before going into live view, as you can't change it once live view has started. * Adjustable shooting rate Again, might be "new to me," but in expanding to blasting away at 6fps, you can manually adjust that from 1 to 5 Fps in order to get a distinct effect. You obviously need to be using a fast enough shutter speed to sustain your choice-- if you're at 1/2 a second, you're not going to shoot faster than 2Fps. As I mentioned in one of my other reviews, I used to be a semi-pro photographer-- I was the photo editor for both a weekly and a daily paper, I've shot tons of sports and news photos, and scenery photography is my hobby. I've recently gotten back into portrait photography as well. While I never owned as many cameras as a true pro would have (that semi- means that I never made enough money at it to be able to easily spring for equipment), I have shot with a lot of other people's equipment, and I can easily say that this is the best camera I've ever used.

I knew nothing about Slr cameras before deciding to buy one but did quite a bit of research. Started off seeing at more expensive cameras and trying to decree whether to get a Canon or Nikon. Went with the lower end camera because I'm a beginner and legitimately the main thing we're seeing for is quality pictures of the kids that we can blow up and frame. Wasn't able to account for any additional price (to my husband) for the upgrade right now. Being able to get a box that included a Vr zoom lens at puny additional cost made the decision to buy this camera much easier. Try buying it in parts, and you'll see there's a huge allowance with this package. I'm still learning the features and will continue to be learning for some time, but I'm very happy with the camera so far and shopping for more picture frames.

Credible digital for the serious amateur : Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-70mm AF-S DX f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED Nikkor Zoom Lens

When the D200 was announced with its feature set and price, I was shocked at the low price. I was on the wait list at any places, but luckily picked up one at Bhphotovideo. I've had one or two minor glitches such as the mirror/shutter locked up. A quick call to NikonUsa and tech maintain told me to reset the menus. I did that and I was back in performance in 10 minutes. The images it produces are incredible. I upgraded from my Nikon D70 which is also an excellent camera, but I wanted any features that the D200 has. My Ai/Ais by hand focus Nikkor lenses can be used on the d200 and exposure metering & aperture Priority mode are features I unquestionably wanted. This makes macro photography a snap with my Ais lenses. Other added features included Mirror Lock Up, 5fps drive, faster read/write on the Cf cards, vertical grip, improved focus speed and the list of other improvements is long.

Image potential - This is was photography is all about. The colors jump out at you as they are vibrant. The 10mp images allow for cropping when primary and you can still print large. The b&w mode is great. This camera beats the medium format film cameras and I have a Hasselblad and a Rollieflex as well. So when I want higher potential than my d200, I have to grab my 4x5 camera...

Shooting raw Nef the files are about 16mb. But shoot compressed raw and the files are only 8-10mb and no one has been able to tell the difference in quality.

Cons: Still very hard to find as interrogate is so high. Need big Cf cards, get 2gb or 4gb Cf cards as you will not want to stop shooting this gem.

Bottom line: The D200 is a pro potential camera body for a buyer price. Wedding photographers have embraced it. There are few photographers who could outgrow it. It's got a ton of features so be sure to read the by hand while you're charging up the battery. Unless you shoot high speed performance sports, this should be all you need. If you need a faster motor drive, then get the D2x.

I've used this lens and its predecessor extensively and I've been happy with both. They are clear, accurate, and focused. You can find a zillion reviews talking about how awesome this lens. I'm going to feature the lens' shortcomings. This is not a be all, end all lens. Don't get me wrong, this is my walkaround lens and it stays on my camera 75% of the time. But it's prominent to know what this lens won't do.

1. Low light. This is a problem that plagues any reasonably priced long-range zoom. If you're going to be doing much shooting indoors, at night, or twilight with this lens, invest in a good capability flash.

2. Bokeh. The majority of the out-of-focus fields look great. However, if you're shooting wide open (low f stop) and there's a lot going on in the background (long grass, trees, etc) some of the finer details can be blurred or occasionally have a weird halo look to them. It's not that big of an issue, but it does happen from time to time.

3. Distortion. Very manageable and hardly noticeable for the most part, but when you shoot things that are obviously supposed to be very level (buildings, roads, etc)at less than about 50mm there is some pincushioning. This is verily correctable in photoshop.

4. Light falloff. In low-light and long-exposure pictures, you can clearly see some falloff in the corners. Again, hardly a big deal for most photography.

5. Weight. If you're not used to big lenses, this will take some getting used to, especially if you're upgrading from a kit lens.

6. Filters. The 72mm size is getting more popular, but there still aren't nearly as many filters available as some other sizes. There are resizing rings to compensate if you already have some larger rings, or are eyeballing something in particular.

Ok, this was not meant to turn you off of this lens, only to give you a grounded sense of what this lens has to offer. It is a great walkaround lens for daily use. It is also a great lens for population seeing to get their foot in the door with high capability lenses without having spend too much. This won't replace prime lenses, fast lenses, and superzooms. This is a perfect lens to buy if can only afford, or only want one lens. I would still hate to be without this lens. Highly recommended.

Previously, I had an N90s and one of the first digital Nikons; the D20. I have been shooting a Canon G10 for several years even doing some Hdr with it. I've had the D5100 about a week and have shot a 100 photos on a range of subjects - family, landscape, sunset, and macro - all with the 18-55 kit lens. It shoots great! detail is way best than I incredible for a "consumer" model. Actually, I chose the D5100 because the potential of the pics was my leading goal. It comes with the same 16mp chip as the D7000 for $400 less. I wanted to spend that money on glass. I've had practically no issue figuring out how to set the by hand controls and have had good luck with the Scenes modes for most shooting. (I haven't tried the Effects and I'm not sure that I will - more of a Photoshop processing kind of guy). My biggest challenge has been getting correct focus as the camera tries to do way more than I'm used to and, if I have it in the wrong Scene mode, there's no telling what might happen. The dancing yellow squares on the face recognition function is a dinky disconcerting. I have also had to learn patience as the Vr function is nice but a dinky slow when handheld. I have learned to leave it off until I verily need it. I think that most of the pro reviewers overstate the weaknesses of many of the products out there and the D5100 is no exception, maybe because it's hard to incompatibility a crowded competitive goods line. At any rate, here is my take on some of the deficiencies. First, the location of the LiveView button work great for me. Because it is a lever rather than a button it is easy to locate and use without piquant my hand on the grip. other complaint has been the lack of an Iso button. I do prefer buttons over menus but there are too many functions which I would like to have on a button that there wouldn't be room for all of them. I programmed the fn button (which is done verily in the menus) to allow me to operate the Iso. It works well both when I'm working straight through the viewer or the display screen. I will agree with complaints that the fn button is too close to the flash button. I've inadvertently mixed them up and it cost me a pic or two. However, I only need to make that kind of mistake a incorporate of times before learn to avoid the problem. The rear screen is great...very high resolution. The zooming function works well and I have been able to check image focus easily. The side tilt is very elegant and I like that if flips to safe the screen when not in use. I'm not much of a videographer but I did shoot some video and the image potential if fantastic. I put it on my Tv and the potential was great. The focus works pretty well although you can see it occasionally get behind for a few seconds for quick piquant subjects - like cars and kids. The microphone isn't worth much so it may be worth investing in the add-on microphone for more serious video projects. All in all, the potential and fit of the camera is very good in spite of being made from plastic. i wouldn't want to drop it or the lens for that matter - they are not made like my old N90s or my 70-200 f2.8 but, on the other hand, I won't won't miss the extra 5 lbs. Of weight because this camera is Light! It is small but fits the hand well and is joy to carry around. To summarize: As you would expect from a Nikon, great photos; as good as the D7000 (according to dpreview) and $400 less. Easy to use, light, good by hand control, and good assisted operate straight through scenes. The D5100 is a good option if you are seeing for high potential images without all the bells and whistles of the D7000. No "cons" except don't drop it...probably won't survive! Battery life isn't great whether (I tend to use the display and LiveView a lot) so I've already invested in a backup battery.
